Job Description
The consultant provides verbatim, first‑person consecutive interpretation for social work intake, medical triage, legal aid and police interviews, ensuring complete linguistic neutrality. They also translate critical shelter documents and identity papers between English/Swahili and languages such as Amharic, Oromo, Tigrinya or Somali. Cultural guidance is offered to the social work team without influencing sessions, and the consultant complies with confidentiality and data‑protection requirements.
Qualifications & Requirements
- • Certified interpreter with proven trauma‑informed experience.
- • Fluency in English, Swahili and at least one of Amharic, Oromo, Tigrinya or Somali.
- • Experience providing consecutive interpretation in social work, medical or legal settings.
- • Knowledge of Kenya’s Data Protection Act and ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
- • Strong interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity.

- • Provide verbatim, first‑person consecutive interpretation during social work intake, medical triage, legal aid sessions and police interviews.
- • Translate shelter documentation, consent forms, emergency signs and identity papers between English/Swahili and target languages (Amharic, Oromo, Tigrinya, Somali).
- • Offer non‑intrusive cultural context to the team regarding idioms and regional nuances.
- • Sign and adhere to the program’s Code of Ethics, NDA and Kenya Data Protection Act.
- • Participate in pre‑session briefings and post‑session debriefings to mitigate vicarious trauma.
