Job Description
The Senior Customs Clearance & International Trade Officer manages import and export documentation, ensuring accurate submission through the URA ASYCUDA system and compliance with tax regulations. The officer coordinates with customs authorities, freight forwarders and internal procurement to resolve queries, conduct post‑clearance audits, and optimise landed costs. Strong analytical skills are applied to duty classification, exemption management and trade‑rule adherence across East African markets. The position requires a bachelor’s degree in a related field, a minimum of five years’ customs
Qualifications & Requirements
- • Bachelor’s degree in Procurement, Logistics, International Business, Law or a related field.
- • Diploma or certificate in Customs Clearing & Forwarding.
- • Minimum 5 years of experience in customs clearance and international trade, including at least 2 years at senior level.
- • Strong knowledge of ASYCUDA World, EAC CET, HS code classification and URA regulations.
- • Good understanding of UNBS, MAAIF, EAC and COMESA trade rules.
- • Experience in food/feed, FMCG or agro‑processing sectors is preferred.
- • Proven skills in landed‑cost analysis, duty optimisation and negotiation.

Responsibilities
- • Prepare and submit URA ASYCUDA import and export entries.
- • Verify bills of lading, commercial invoices, packing lists, certificates of origin and import/export permits.
- • Liaise with URA Customs, clearing agents, shipping lines, freight forwarders, UNBS and MAAIF.
- • Verify duty, VAT, WHT and other applicable taxes.
- • Manage duty exemptions, duty drawback and EAC CET classifications.
- • Advise suppliers and buyers on FOB, CIF and DDP Incoterms.
- • Track consignments through Mombasa/Dar Port, Busia, Malaba and Katuna.
- • Prepare export documentation including EUR1 and certificates of origin.
- • Maintain customs records and import/export registers.
- • Handle URA queries, post‑clearance audits and customs‑related disputes.
- • Advise procurement on duties, lead times and clearance timelines.
- • Identify opportunities to reduce landed costs and demurrage.
