Job Description

The Head of Medical Services provides overall clinical leadership for a hospital, overseeing outpatient, inpatient, maternity, theatre and laboratory services. The role ensures high‑quality, evidence‑based patient care, drives clinical governance and quality improvement, and manages resources and budgets. The incumbent leads multidisciplinary teams, mentors staff, and ensures compliance with regulatory standards.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • • MBChB (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) from a recognized institution
  • • Master’s degree in Medicine, Public Health, Health Systems Management or MBA (preferred)
  • • Minimum 5–7 years of clinical experience, with at least 3 years in a senior management or supervisory role in a Level 4 or higher facility
  • • Registered and licensed by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council with a valid practicing certificate
  • • Strong clinical leadership, decision‑making and governance skills

Responsibilities

  • • Provide leadership and coordination for all clinical departments, including outpatient, inpatient, maternity, theatre and laboratory services
  • • Ensure efficient delivery of integrated, high‑quality healthcare across all units
  • • Oversee clinical decision‑making frameworks and promote evidence‑based practice
  • • Develop and implement clinical strategies aligned with hospital objectives
  • • Create, review and enforce clinical policies, SOPs and governance frameworks to ensure patient safety
  • • Monitor clinical outcomes, initiate corrective actions and lead infection prevention and control programs
  • • Drive continuous quality improvement, accreditation compliance and patient safety initiatives
  • • Supervise medical officers, specialists, clinical officers and nursing teams, conducting performance appraisals and development plans
  • • Identify training needs, coordinate continuous medical education and promote teamwork and professionalism
  • • Manage recruitment, onboarding and resource allocation for clinical staff in collaboration with HR
  • • Enhance patient experience by improving satisfaction, handling complaints and strengthening communication with patients and families
  • • Participate in budgeting, monitor medical supplies, drugs and equipment utilization, and support procurement planning
  • • Ensure all clinical staff maintain valid licenses and comply with national healthcare regulations and KMPDC standards
